We will be exploring the topic of knights and castles using stories, information texts and historical sources of information. Children will be researching knights and writing about a day in their life in the form of a diary. We will also be reading traditional fairy tales and those with a twist. Children will have an opportunity to write a traditional fairy tale such as Rapunzel from an alternative viewpoint e.g. the witch.
We will be finding out why castles were built and what they were used for. We will also be learning about heraldry and designing and making our own coat of arms. Children will learn new skills such as weaving.
In maths our focus this year will be on increasing the children’s fluency with whole numbers and the four key operations, (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) including number facts and the concept of place value. By the end of year 3 it is expected that the children will be able to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
This half term we will revisit work on place value of 3-digit numbers and addition and subtraction (developing mental strategies and written methods). We will also continue to develop problem solving skills.
Science will be taught as part of our connected curriculum and will focus on rocks and soils (including fossils). Children will take part in a number of practical activities which will involve observing, comparing and sorting.
Please make it a habit to read with your child and to ask them open-ended questions such as 'why do you think...?' so that your child can really elaborate on their answer and you can also see how much your child has understood the text.
This term our PE is on Wednesdays and Thursdays, please ensure that your child has a full PE kit, so they can participate.
Homework will go out on Fridays and we will expect it to be in the following Wednesday.
I am looking forward to an exciting term in 3H!
