Welcome to 2P!
This term our topic is
We have been learning all about superheroes. 2P have been looking at why
superheroes are super, and what makes us super. We have also designed our
own characters and described what they look like.
In Literacy we are reading the book 'Eliot Jones, Midnight Superhero'. The children will be acting out parts from the story before going on to plan and write their own Eliot Jones mission.
Children in Year 2 must read for at least 15 minutes each evening. Your child's reading will really improve if they practise every day. Show an interest in your child's reading homework. Ask your child questions about the book that they are reading. For example, where is the story set? eg, in a house, castle, beach, farm, funfair, park, playground, forest. How many characters are in the story? Tell me something about the main character.
Whilst children learn about numbers and maths at school, there are also lots of ways
that you can support your child at home. here are a few ideas to help you.........
Children can count anything - sweets, cars, trees, pennies, buttons, pasta, building bricks. Encourage them to count things wherever they are! Give them mini tasks at the supermarket eg putting six carrots in a bag, 3 tins of beans etc.
Look at the pattern of house numbers as you walk along - are they odd or even numbers? What number will be next?
In Year 2, the children begin to learn their 2x, 5x, 10x tables. Food can be a very motivating way of learning their times tables and the corresponding division facts. For example, sweets can be grouped and counted, children can count the biscuits in a packet in twos as they put them in the biscuit jar, chunks on a bar of chocolate can be counted in pairs and so on.
Money can also be motivating! Give your children a jar of coins to sort by the different values. Find the biggest coin. Is it worth the most? Find the smallest coin. Is it worth the least? Put them in order of value. Use 2p, 5p and 10p coins to support learning the times tables.
WE HAVE FOUND THAT CHILDREN WHO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONSOLIDATE THEIR LEARNING AT HOME, MAKE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS
Remember PE is on a Thursday and Friday and books are changed on Wednesday.
