Wed 22 Apr 2020 Mrs Tagliaferri

    Hello all,

I hope that you are all staying well. It seems a long time since we were all together at Lordship Lane. I have been thinking about you all everyday and I look forward to seeing you all back at school soon.

This is a very challenging time for everybody and we are aware that some young people may find this situation very worrying and at times quite overwhelming. Rest assured that there is lots of help out there for families who perhaps need some assurance for their general well being or may need some extra support with feelings of anxiety. Miss Jamal and I have been looking a fantastic website at www.youngminds.org.uk. It is aimed to support children, parents and teachers. It's FREE, it's FUN and it provides loads of fantastic advice and support to reassure us all that there is help out there for those who need it. Please do have a browse through if you have time.

Most importantly, please do look after each other and if you do get a chance to check out this website please do email the school to let me know what you think.

  • Welcome back to the Summer Term

Tue 21 Apr 2020 Mrs Randles

    Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to what will prove to be a very different Summer Term. I hope you were all able to enjoy some relaxation over the last two weeks and at least get some fresh air and sunshine.

The teachers have been busy planning for this next round of remote learning and the learning for this week will soon be on the class pages on the website. We are all still finding our feet with this way of working and are constantly reviewing what and how we are using the resources and platforms available to us. New resources and access to different ways of learning are being pushed out all the time and if you are on social media I’m sure you will be seeing the many different organisations offering a huge range of resources. We are constantly looking and evaluating these resources and will only send out links to you that we feel are appropriate and worthwhile.

Please be reassured that the work set by school is a suggestion for you, you can choose to use some/all/none of it, so if there are parts which you prefer over others, then please select as you see fit. We understand that as parents, you are your child's primary educators and that you will know what is best for your child and family circumstances. Therefore, the resources we are providing will be used in different ways in different households.

BBC Bitesize and The Oak National Academy have launched a range of online lessons to help with

remote learning. We have just begun to explore The Oak National Academy resources, so we will test these out before we start including them in the planning you will see on the web pages.  We hope that by ensuring we offer a variety of tools, parents will find what suits them and their children best.

I am sure that many of you will be communicating with friends and family via Zoom/Facetime/Skype to stay in touch (and do the odd quiz), and I am sure your children are all becoming familiar with online communication! However, I just wanted to explain that we have no current plans to create online live lessons and there are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, it is hard to get a private, secure channel. Our children are not at an age where they are able to (or should be) accessing social media independently. We are conscious that many parents are working from home, and by scheduling set times, this may exclude some due to their parent's work commitments, or be encouraged to use the device without supervision. We also have a number of teachers who are caring and educating their own children as well as working from home. They, therefore, maybe working more unsociable hours to fit around their families. I am sure you will agree that the teachers have been doing an excellent job so far communicating with you via Tapestry and the school website.

Please do use the email communication at the bottom of the class page if you have any queries about the learning which has been set, and the teachers will be only too happy to help you find a solution. If you have any queries or concerns not related to learning then please do email the admin address and the relevant member of SLT will be able to respond to you. We want all children to have the best possible experiences during this unusual time. We are monitoring all of the emails so we are able to ensure that any common concerns are addressed swiftly.

    Keep well and stay safe

    Mrs Randles :)

  • A New Term

Mon 20 Apr 2020 Jenny Langstaffe

    Good afternoon,

Welcome back to (home) school! After what must seem the strangest ‘Easter holiday’ period ever, your teachers will be back to setting you all regular learning activities as from Monday. It feels like we’ve been away from school for absolutely ages, although in reality our children have, to date, missed just the two weeks of their schooling.

However, none of us are certain when we’ll be returning and I’d like to emphasise how important it is to engage with your teachers and ensure as much ‘continuity of education’ as possible during this period of school closure. We all recognise that ‘working from home’ is very different to working in your day-to-day school environment and we were extremely proud of our children’s efforts during that two-week pre-Easter period of school closure.

We advise that you create your own routine that allows plenty of ‘free time’ or breaks, but also positively addresses the learning activities that are set by your teachers to ensure that, when we do return to school, you are still in the habit of ‘organised learning’ and feel confident that you haven’t fallen behind.

I have added in two online support websites which can also be used at home.

The Oak National Academy https://www.thenational.academy/ is also offering a huge amount of support for online learning.

BBC Bitesize https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize are also offering exceptional support.

Of course whilst the sun is shining again you may just wish to make use of that opportunity in a safe outdoor space.

Many thanks, stay safe and well.

    Jenny Langstaffe

  • Some fun maths games to play

Wed 15 Apr 2020 Mr Thompson

    Hi everyone,

I hope you are all keeping safe and well, and that you've managed to make the most of the nice weather we've had recently in whatever way that current circumstances permit.

One of the things that you can all be doing at home that will have a big impact on your learning in school when we come back is mental maths, and luckily there are lots of games you can play that will help you with this but which, more importantly, are really fun. Here are some of my favourites:

Hit the button is a classic - many children will have played it already and it's great for both key stage 1 and their number bonds or times tables higher up the school.

Countdown - this is an online version of the classic TV gameshow. You can also play a much harder version involving fractions here.

Remainders Game - this one will really get you thinking. Read the instructions carefully - you may need to play a couple of times before you get the hang of it so be persistent!

If getting online is difficult, this blog has got lots of ideas for mathematical games that you can play offline too.

    Happy mathsing!

  • Free information book explaining the coronavirus to children, illustrated by Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler

Thu 09 Apr 2020 Mrs Randles

    Morning everybody!

Today I have a link to a book about the coronavirus aimed at children.  Some of you may have seen it already, but if you haven't, it is a really comprehensive explanation aimed at young people to explain more about the virus.

    https://nosycrow.com/blog/released-today-free-information-book-explaining-coronavirus-children-illustrated-gruffalo-illustrator-axel-scheffler/

I hope you are all still managing to find some normality in these strange times we find ourselves in.  I'd like to encourage you to continue to send in your entries for the Easter egg competition.  We have had several 'eggcellent' entries so far but there is still time to send in yours!

    Stay safe and well everybody,

    Mrs Randles :)

  • Tell a Story

Mon 06 Apr 2020 Mrs Langstaffe

    Hello,

I hope everyone had a lovely and safe weekend at home.

The theme today is to tell a story. Firstly I wanted to let you all know about an online broadcast by  Julia Donaldson, author of 'The Gruffalo' on Facebook every Thursday at 4pm.  She is retelling her stories with the help of teddies and props. Maybe you could do the same at home.

Can you make-up your own story and illustrate it or retell your favourite? Find props? Record yourself or video it and share with your family at bedtime. The following website also allows you to listen to stories or the are lots on youtube you can hear.

    https://stories.audible.com/start-listen

Have a lovely Monday and enjoy telling your own stories.

    Mrs Langstaffe

  • Hello and thinking of you all!

Fri 03 Apr 2020 Mrs Randles

    Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the close of the Spring term, we are at the end of what has been a very strange 2 weeks for us all. I hope you are all starting to fall into your new ‘normal’ way of life.

The next two weeks are what would have been our Easter Holidays, I know some of you will have had to cancel plans to see family, holidays and much more. However, the weather is supposed to brighten up again over the next few days and I hope you are able to get out into the sunshine.

There are lots of ideas of activities at the bottom of this email to keep the children busy over the next couple of weeks in addition to the work the class teachers have put up on their class pages.

For you, in case you didn’t know, the National Theatre are going to stream some of their plays live every Thursday evening: https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/which should be a great night in for parents!

Remember, it is ok for your child to be bored and have unstructured time. Actually, there is a lot of research saying that being bored has huge benefits for children. When children are left to their own devices, they’re forced to be more creative and imaginative in finding ways to amuse themselves, it helps build their resilience and develop their problem solving skills. When your children have opportunities to occupy themselves, and manage to do so successfully, it gives their self-esteem a boost. Research has shown that allowing the mind time to wander rather than being focused on activities all the time is very important for mental health. When we talk about our childhood memories, we rarely remember anything material, it is connections, laughter and nature that we do remember!

    Keep well and stay safe,

    Mrs Randles
